Internet hygiene

The internet is an invaluable resource, but it can also be a dangerous place if you don't take the necessary precautions. Good online behaviour is key to staying safe online and keeping your devices secure from attack. Here are some tips and tricks to help keep your data safe:

  • make sure you have up-to-date antivirus software installed on all of your devices
  • use strong passwords for all accounts
  • avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading unknown files
  • only access websites that are secured with HTTPS encryption technology
  • regularly check for security updates from device manufacturers, operating system providers, and other software vendors.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your information remains protected while browsing the web.

Tech Tip of May 2023

If you believe your computer or phone has been compromised from being hacked, it is essential that you change your username and password immediately from a computer that hasn't been hacked and avoid using passwords similar to those used before as hackers can easily repeat patterns.

Here are some tips on creating a new password:

In order to create a secure password I have put together this tutorial for doing it at home or at the library.

• Take a book from the shelf, flip to a random page and pick a random word • Repeat until you have enough words to add up to 12 characters • It is important not to choose abstract words as it would be difficult for you to remember the password. • To comply with most password restrictions, they should also include numbers, capitalization and symbols in their passwords. It is ok to choose significant numbers but stay away from birthdays, anniversaries or any personal information. This information is often used to hack into accounts by using the forgot password prompt.
